Explore Southern Morocco’s Ancient Oasis Trail and Desert Landscapes.
Itinerary
Departure at 9:00 AM from your hotel or riad in Ouarzazate.
Your journey begins as you travel through the Anti-Atlas Mountains, passing the Tizi n'Tinififft Pass, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the village of Aït Saoune.
After passing through Agdz, you’ll take the old caravan route that winds through lush palm groves and farmlands, revealing the heart of the magnificent Draa Valley — one of Morocco’s most ancient and culturally rich regions, stretching over 200 km in the southeast of the country.
The valley has been inhabited for millennia, traditionally home to the Kushites, descendants of Kush, the grandson of Noah. Likely animists and sedentary in origin, the Kushites formed the ancient foundation of oasis populations in southern Morocco, especially in the Draa region.
You’ll stop for a visit at the Kasbah of Tamnougalt, a historic fortress and fine example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture.
Continue your 4x4 journey through the dramatic southern landscapes toward Zagora, where you’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
Afterward, head to Tamegroute, known for its ancient Quranic library, home to centuries-old manuscripts and religious texts, as well as for its green pottery workshops.
The day continues with a visit to the Tinfou Dunes, the first golden sand dunes before the deep Sahara. Here, you can climb the dunes and, if you wish, enjoy a camel ride through the desert sands.
Return to Ouarzazate by approximately 6:30 PM.
